The Secret of Youth - or - How I Tried To Post My Real Age But MySpace Wouldn't Let Me
One of the secrets that I have discovered is to know less and less about oneself; in other words, to "define" oneself less and less to yourself and to others. I have no limits because I do not set definitions of myself. I stopped limiting myself. I discoverd that if I stopped being any age; then, in a way, I am all ages at the same time. This opens up unusual avenues for me.
I am sure that is not the way most people want me to answer their favorite question (oh, how most of us hate mystery and love little boxes), or maybe, it is, at a deeper level.
Think about the structure of the English language: we say, "I AM happy", "I AM sick", instead of "I FEEL happy", "I FEEL sick". Do you see how different we feel as we hear (and internalize) these phrases?
So, when I had to post an age on MySpace, I experienced consternation at first, then I decided to have a little experiment. I tried posting various dates and seeing how they made me feel. I seriously considered using the youngest possible date, which results in the age of 12, I think, but I was afraid that that might disqualify me or attract some unsavory characters. The current age is the last experiment; I am sure it may change again. At some level, all the ages are right, and so it feels like a successful experiment in the power of belief and the written word.
In this one thing there is great power.
