The Power of Thought

The Toltec way says that it is our thoughts that make our reality. Our thoughts can help or hinder us; most of us are not controlling our thoughts, therefore our reality seems chaotic; often it is not what we want. Byron Katie holds seminars with people where she asks four simple questions of each person.

So let's say someone in the crowd states "God doesn't love me".

1st question: "Is that true?"

2nd question: "Can you absolutely know that it's true?"

3rd question: "How do you react when you believe that thought?"

4th question: "Who would you be without that thought?"

Susan Gregg who studied with Miguel Ruiz calls this the "drop down" method of ascertaining your feelings: first you define your emotion (emotional body), then the thought that engendered the emotion (mental body), then what you feel at the core of you (spiritual body). Once I did this when I was crying; when I got to the core, I found out that my spirit was having the time of its life. It's always having a good time, no matter what storms are playing on the surface, no matter the tragedy.

Last fall I realized that emotions are useful. This realization was echoed in The Secret to my surprise. I call emotions the gateway to intuition. Only "skillful" emotions (to use a Buddhist term; in other words emotions that are not based upon self-importance. Most people are consumed and controlled by their emotions because at the core all of them feel self-important (especially those who feel victimized).

Once you clear away self-importance to some degree, emotions can become a guide, because they make your preferences clear. Thus intuition becomes a guide.

The book by Esther and Jerry Hicks, "Ask And It Is Given" calls it your emotional guidance system.

My teachings say that "the world is a feeling". In other words, one's reality is made up of the feelings one has; we are not so much reacting to the "out there", as we are creating the "out there" based upon our thoughts and feelings.

They go further to say that if you change your perception or focal point sufficiently the world as you know it vanishes. Perception is the basis of reality.

If you haven't seen it, rent out "What The Bleeep Do We Know". Metaphysics / Quantum Physics 101. Also see the movie The Secret online.
